Steps Meeting FAQ
The aim of the Sunday night Steps Meeting is to carry the A.A. message by presenting the Twelve Step Program to members of A.A. in a series of meetings focused on the Program as described in the ‘Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous’ and the ‘Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions’.
What sort of meeting is it?
This is a regular Alcoholics Anonymous meeting that focuses on the A.A. Program – The Twelve Suggested Steps – one step at a time.
What happens at the meeting?
Members are asked to read from the ‘Big Book’ and the ‘Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions’ and to share their Experience, Strength and Hope related to the particular step. Members are encouraged to ask questions. (You don’t have to read or share if you don’t want to.)
Is the meeting like a lecture or class, someone telling me what to do?
No, it is not a lecture. There is a chairperson who selects the readings and keeps the meeting focused on the particular step being discussed. The meeting is about sharing Experience, Strength and Hope. It is not about expressing opinion or argument.
Who can come to the meeting?
This is an open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. This means that anyone who has a desire to stop drinking may attend.
Is this where I ‘do’ the steps?
We don’t ‘do’ the steps in the meeting; we just share the information and experience. It is up to individual members to work the A.A. program as they see fit in light of their own experience.
What is the ‘series’ of meetings?
The meetings are run as a complete series over 13 weeks. At each meeting we focus on just one or two steps. The 13th week is a Spiritual Concept Meeting that rounds off the series.
Do I have to start at the first meeting of the series?
You can come along to any meeting at any time and learn something and share your own experience OR, like many members have done, you can make a commitment and attend all 13 weeks of a series of meetings.
Who runs the meeting?
The Steps in the City Group is an autonomous group just like any other A.A. Group. It is made up of regular A.A. members trying to carry the A.A. message to other Alcoholics.
When should I come to this type of meeting?
When you want to stop drinking but find you can’t.
When you are sick and tired of being sick and tired.
When you want some peace of mind and serenity and
are willing to go to any length to get it.
Do I need to bring anything?
Bring your copy of the Big Book and 12 x12 if you have them. If you don’t have them you can use some of our spare copies.
Bring your sponsor if you have one. If you don’t have one, that’s OK. You can still learn about the Steps and you may want to ask one of the members about sponsorship.
Bring your Experience, Strength and Hope.
